Christina Applegate says she is “just learning how to be happy” – and thanks fans for their support after being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.

The Sarah’s Key actress was diagnosed when she was 46 and joined in a stand against false claims that MS can cause cancer. The disease can cause debilitating symptoms such as double vision, numbness, vision and muscle loss.

Applegate thanked fans for their “positive energy and love” on Instagram, calling it “one of the most amazing things that has ever happened to me”.

Speaking in 2011 about a number of symptoms in which she appeared “embarrassed and ashamed” about, she said: “When you’re told something like that … it’s like a slap in the face. I felt like I’d lost part of my soul and a piece of myself.”

Applegate recently appeared on Saturday Night Live, playing herself, but said she would not be back to host.

She and husband Martyn LeNoble have a two-year-old daughter, Sadie Grace.
