Carlsen, 25, says he is more than happy to call him a ‘husband and a partner’

One question remains: did Magnus Carlsen and Viswanathan Anand have sex?

According to Carlsen, no, and he has not a prayer of getting caught with his pants down.

The final World Championship game between the Norwegian world champion and the Indian challenger ended up in a drawn match at the UNLV Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas on Sunday. Carlsen praised Anand, suggesting that their “business-as-usual”, unlike the waiting parties in the arena, was “pretty great”.

“We had a good game. [It] wasn’t as exciting as our previous games. But at the end, it still had a lot of excitement,” Carlsen told Associated Press.

The pair met in an expertly staged draw ceremony attended by the presidents of UNLV and the local Las Vegas casino giant Harrah’s.

Carlsen, who said he appreciated the pulling together of the game for the good of the sport, assured the media that in life and in chess, “I’m a completely different person”. He went on to describe how their relationship was the most positive thing happening in his life.

“I am quite happy with what we’ve done, with the way we’ve resolved this thing in a business-as-usual way,” Carlsen said. “In chess, we’re just sort of each doing what we do best and working as partners.”

“I’m not going to go into any details, but I am also not going to say that I’m not having sex,” he said, reiterating a point made to reporters in both English and Norwegian on Sunday.

Anand was visibly disappointed after the draw. He said he needed to conduct a war of attrition, but failed to connect. “I went through a lot of twists and turns, and I’m really tired now. I have been for the last four days,” he said.

The draw means that Magnus Carlsen needs just two victories to hold the world title.
