Actress Mindy Kaling shared a rare photo of her kids’ feet and arms, along with a Christmas card-like shot of her decorated to look like an elf on an Xmas tree, on her Instagram page this week.
In the photo, the 38-year-old actress and writer is seen smiling with her 5-year-old daughter, Katherine, and 10-month-old son, Frances Cole. Katherine and Frances are seen lying near the ocean — appropriately, by a shore full of sea gulls. The other two young children’s feet and arms appear to be framed by a metal fence, and the photo offers a rare glimpse of how serious Kaling is about her personal protectiveness of her kids.
“What I’m grateful for,” Kaling wrote. “I am so blessed to have my children.”
Kaling went on to say how pleased she was to participate in the spirit of the season with a holiday card-like photo of herself and her children hanging out like something out of a “Christmas card that I might have given to my mother years ago.”
“I get a joy every year and this time my children made me feel it in a way that I can’t explain to you,” she wrote. “I hope you enjoy it. #HappyNewYear.”
Later on Wednesday, Kaling was seen carrying her son, who was wearing a light blue T-shirt and Nike sneakers, into a D.C. restaurant in which she had gone for brunch. At one point, she bent over to ask her son for a high five.
Kaling is not new to embracing family snaps on her social media pages — Kaling enjoys sharing photos of her children, including a family-seeming shot of Kaling, her husband, Indian actor/comedian and producer Andy Cohen, and their daughter during their trip to India last year.
But Kaling has also shied away from sharing family photos of herself or even publicly discussing the presence of Katherine and Frances.
Last month, the actress seemed skeptical about the notion that Katherine and Frances have social media accounts. Asked during an appearance on “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon” whether Katherine has a Twitter or Instagram account, Kaling was vague.
“I think Katherine has an Instagram. I don’t know if Frances does,” she said.
Kaling finally revealed that Katherine’s Twitter was actually her account, and when Fallon inquired as to how her parents must feel about sharing Katherine’s photos on Twitter, Kaling was much more self-deprecating about it.
“It’s kind of humiliating when I send my mother pictures,” she said. “It’s a little embarrassing, but she can take it, you know.”
