Slow Town: Crossing Notes

The peak months of summer marked the debut of SlowSancho, which began life in 1973 as a cooperative retreat for artists and artists’ studios. These days, the retreat offers more than just a weekend at the roach motel next to the zoo. The three lodges — Pacific Park Lodge, Wave Point Lodge and Calf Canyon Lodge — offer healthful, simple meals and a place to recharge. The adjacent farm grows fruits and vegetables to create a vibrant salad bar, which guests can enjoy in rustic enclaves the resort offers along the property. At the beginning of the season, the resort’s Slow City cafe offers free coffee, hot cocoa, crafts and library hours. As if getting away from it all weren’t enough, there are over 50 miles of trails across the Western Cape as well as countless low-pressure rivers for canoeing and kayaking.

On a recent Sunday, Heather Grosholz selected a candle-lit yoga class at the Wave Point Lodge with beautiful views of the Piers area and the churning bay beyond. Retreaters from around the world continue to drop in year after year. Snacks are available throughout the retreat. Afterward, they make their way up to the Wine Trail where they can indulge in local wines and really soak in the scenery.
