The role of a fresh-faced medical student, Billy McBride, from central Iowa, who faces a difficult choice between his convictions and evidence from his wife’s diary, Hart was drawn to the film by its authenticity.

“It’s telling the real story of what’s happening in America right now,” Hart told Reuters. “The whole world is going in a dangerous, dark place right now and this is a disturbing story.”

Hart said the film could relate to the president and Congress who are still struggling to pass legislation following US president Donald Trump’s inauguration.

“The biggest problem with this country right now is we’re working toward legislation that may have those issues that relate to our government and we’re still talking politics instead of coming together and making life and death decisions,” he said.

Hart is known for comedy while Mike White, director and screenwriter of True Story, is known for drama such as Whip It, School of Rock and Wonderstruck.

Hart said the character did not walk the familiar comedic walk, adding: “It’s different from what I’m used to.”

The 30-year-old also credits his family for helping him conquer his fear of acting.
