A gunman shot at least one Israeli soldier and killed one in an attack in Jerusalem’s Old City on Wednesday, Israeli police said.

Police spokeswoman Luba Samri said the assailant is a Palestinian resident of the Old City. The victim, Israel Defense Forces’ spokeswoman Lt. Col. Avital Leibovich said, was a soldier in the guard booth at the junction in the West Bank city.

She said two or three other soldiers were wounded in the incident, adding that some of them were wearing body armor and were able to escape.

At least four soldiers were injured in the attack in which the assailant was shot and killed by police, the IDF confirmed.

Samri said “a terrorist approached the soldiers and opened fire on them, and others opened fire on the terrorist.”

Leibovich said the assailant, who died of his wounds, was identified as Ahed Tamimi. The 19-year-old Jerusalem resident has become a leading figure of the Israeli-Palestinian violence in recent years.

Tensions in the city have risen in recent weeks, with Palestinians having carried out a series of demonstrations and protests in the western part of the city. The Israelis have responded with dozens of arrests and tear gas canisters.
