Life time member of the Rolling Stones of American and one of the organization’s founding members, had his major break in 1959 in England with “Paint It Black.” Bassist Bill Wyman joined in 1959 and Brian Jones had joined in 1959 and formed the core of the band in 1962. The original lineup included Keith Richards, Mick Jagger, Charlie Watts, Ron Wood and Bill Wyman and in 1962, added Joe Cocker.

Born Dec. 17, 1943, in London, the famed Rolling Stones guitarist has been playing rock and roll since he was 15, when he started to play guitar in free jam sessions with his brother and a group of friends. Along the way, he met other musicians who would become “friends” in that he would hang out with them and play music with them.

“Once I meet somebody, they can come around,” Keith Richards has said. “And sometimes you’ll have a small thing to do with them…and you’ll keep hanging out, every day you do that. Every day. ‘Come and have a piece of the pie.’ Because you don’t really buy them. You only stay with them for a small piece of the pie. They’re really not that good. They’re not that poor. They’re not that stupid. They’re just still able to make and keep friends. And, of course, they don’t even take you seriously.”

In 1967, Mick Jagger suggested that Keith Richards form a band, and the Rolling Stones banding was born. The group would release the first of their six consecutive No. 1 albums, “Get Yer Ya-Ya’s Out,” in 1969, a massive worldwide success. After years of touring, the Rolling Stones formed their own management and recording company. It launched The Rolling Stones’ full, non-break-up album, issued in 1971. It would spawn many hits, including “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction,” “It’s Only Rock and Roll,” “Start Me Up,” “You Can’t Always Get What You Want,” “Midnight Rambler,” “Honky Tonk Women,” “Ruby Tuesday,” “Tumbling Dice,” “Midnight Rambler” and “Paint It Black.”

Keith Richards has had numerous other notable hits as well. He has wrote several songs, including “No Woman, No Cry,” and “Dead Flowers,” and he was named Album Artist of the Decade by Radio Times for 1989 and 1990.

Over the years, “Rolling Stones” has sold more than 350 million albums, led several tours, and appeared on numerous TV shows, including “The Muppet Show” and “The Love Boat.” The band includes Wood, Jagger, and Peter’s first born daughter, model Lizzie. In 2008, the Rolling Stones reformed to celebrate the 50th anniversary of their music, with the exception of the original lead singer, Jagger. He made peace with Richards. The band re-released their first albums, then played shows in 10 cities including New York, London, and Paris.

In 2009, the Rolling Stones were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the only group other than the Beatles to earn the honor. Two years later, the band reunited on stage at the Glastonbury Festival in London.

According to a 2017 interview, the Rolling Stones played some of their best songs as recently as this month in France.
